Thirty, ninth-grade girls from three underprivileged schools in Gauteng are embarking on a transformative journey with the launch of a Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) education initiative by Melisizwe Girls in STEM Programme, funded by the Sage Foundation. Designed to bridge the gender and socioeconomic gap in STEM fields, this four-year partnership aims to equip young girls with the skills and confidence needed to pursue careers in traditionally male-dominated industries.
Launched in 2021, the Melisizwe Girls in STEM programme identifies promising young talent with a passion for maths and science and provides them with essential supplementary tuition. The selected girls, chosen for both their potential and financial need, will receive personalised assistance aimed at fostering their academic success and preparing them for future careers in STEM fields.
“This program represents a significant milestone in our ongoing efforts to empower young girls in STEM,” says Candice Kern-Thomas CEO at Melisizwe. “Our first group of students are finishing high school this year and will start their careers in STEM next year. We believe learning maths and science is a marathon not a sprint. That’s why we’ve decided to work with schools from the start of the girls’ high school experience, ensuring we can achieve good results.”
The partnership between Melisizwe and Sage Foundation not only offers vital financial backing, but also extends mentorship opportunities to participants of the programme.
